ISO6941: 1984 Textile fabrics- Burning behaviour-Measurement of flame spread properties of vertically oriented specimens
EN 533: Method EN532Protective clothing- protection against heat and flame-Limited flame spread materials and material assemblies.
Specimens
560mm*170mm 3 pcs in length and width direction
200mm*160mm length and width direction
Pretreatment
/
Both original and washed sample are needed to be tested.
Washing procedure A or B: A: Machine washing at 75° C for 12 cycles. Or carrying out at least 5 wash cycles as the manufacturer's maintenance instructions. B. Water soaking as per BS 5651: 1978 and followed by 5 dry cleaning cycles.
Flame
Butane gas
Flame applied time: 15s
Flame height: 40± 2mm
Propane gas
Flame applied time 10 s
Flame height: 40mm
Position of ignition source
Position the burner perpendicular to the surface of the specimen such that the axis of the burner is 20mm above the line of the lower pins in line with the vertical centerline of the face of the specimen. The end of the burner is 17mm form the face of the specimen.
Same to ISO 6941
Procedure
1. Apply the flame for 15s.
2. Measure the following times and record:
(1) From the start of the application of the igniting flame to the severance of the first marker thread. (S)
(2) From the start of the application of the igniting flame to the severance of the second marker thread. (S)
(3) From the start of the application of the igniting flame to the severance of the third marker thread. (S)(4)afterflame time(s)
(5)afterglow time(s)
(6)the maximum burnt or damaged width and length.
(7) whether the flame reaches a vertical edge of the specimen
(8)whether or not a hole is burnt or melted in the specimen
1. Apply the flame for 10s
2. Record:
(1) Whether for any flame reaches the upper edge or either vertical edge of the test specimen (2) Whether a hole develops
(3) the occurrence of flaming or molten debris
(4) Whether afterglow spreads beyond the flame spread area into the undamaged area
(5) afterglame time
(6) afterglow time
Pass or Fail Criteria
New Wave Requirement:
A. No specimen shall give flaming to the top or either side edge
B. No specimen shall give hole formation
C. No specimen shall give flaming or molten debris
D. The mean value of afterflame time shall be =2s
E. The mean value of afterglow time shall be =2s
Index 2:
(1) No Specimen shall permit any part of the lowest boundary of any flame to reach the upper or either vertical edge. (2)No specimen shall give flaming debris. (3)Any afterglow shall not spread from the carbonized area to the undamaged area after the cessation of flaming. (4) No specimen shall give hole formation.
