The failure of many ceramic materials applications often blames developers for not understanding the differences between ceramic powders and their lack of understanding of their properties. In general, high-quality Si3N4 powders should have high alpha content, uniform composition, low impurity and uniform distribution in ceramics, small particle size, narrow particle size distribution and good dispersion. The α phase of a good Si3N4 powder should be at least 90%. This is because some of the α phase will be converted into the β phase during the sintering process, and there is not enough α phase content, which will reduce the strength of the ceramic material.
