The ability of CNG/LPG high voltage sensors to detect gases depends on the chemical resistance conduction current. The most commonly used chemical resistor is tin dioxide (SnO2), which is an N-type semiconductor with free electrons (also called donors). Normally, there is more oxygen in the atmosphere than there is combustible gas. The oxygen particles attract the free electrons present in SnO2, pushing them to the surface. Since no free electrons are available, the output current will be zero. When the sensor is exposed to a toxic or combustible gas, this reducing gas (orange) reacts with adsorbed oxygen particles, breaking the chemical bond between oxygen and free electrons, thereby releasing free electrons. When the free electrons return to their original position, they can now conduct an electric current, and this conduction will be proportional to the number of free electrons available in SnO2, and if the gas is highly toxic, more free electrons will be available.
