Common sheet metal fabrication techniques

1) Crimping

sheet metal fabrication usually contains sharp edges with "burrs" after initial production. Crimping is a molding process that involves deburring a sheet of metal to produce a smooth edge.

2) Bend

Another common sheet metal fabrication process is bending. Companies often use brake presses or similar machine presses to bend sheet metal.

3) Iron

The sheet metal can also be ironed to achieve an even thickness. For example, most aluminum cans are made of pressed aluminum. In its original state, the aluminum sheet is too thick for a beverage can, so it is ironed to get a thinner, more even composition

4) Laser cutting

In recent years, laser cutting has become an increasingly common sheet metal forming process. Through laser cutting, the sheet metal is exposed to a high-energy laser that burns holes in the metal.

5) Hydraulic molding

A little-known sheet metal forming process is hydraulic forming. Like deep drawing, hydraulic forming involves drawing a blank over a die. So, what's the difference between hydroforming and deep drawing? The main difference between the two processes is that deep drawing requires multiple drawdown reductions, while hydraulic molding can be done in a single step.

6) Punching

Finally, stamping is a sheet metal forming process that involves the use of punches and dies to punch holes in sheet metal. The sheet metal is placed between the punch and the die. Next, the punch presses down and through the sheet metal to create a hole.
